Odoo supports several units of measure. The product can be expressed in several units of measure at once. Make sure that all the units of measure used for a product are in the same units of measure category. Odoo has a feature to manage multiple units of measure for sales, purchase, and inventory efficiently. There are many business cases where the purchase is done in bulk to get the price benefits and the same product sale in a different unit of measure.
Let’s take the following examples:
1. You buy a tray of eggs from a supplier. The base unit of measure of an egg is in “Unit”. Instead of giving an order of 60eggs we can give 2 trays.
2. You buy petrol from an American brand supplier who sells in Gallons, then a purchase unit of measure of petrol will be in “Gallons”. Your customers, however, are Indian will buy petrol in Liters, so the sold quantities are in Liters. Here, the unit of measures in “Liters”
3. You buy curtains from a supplier, the purchase unit of curtains is in “unit roll”. You sell the curtains in square meters, unit of measures in “ square meters”.
To enable the “Unit of Measures” option in order to display the multiple units of measure. So, in the inventory application go to Configuration -> Settings Under the Products application. Search for Unit of Measure and select Some products may be sold/purchased in different units of measure (advanced), then click on Apply. In UoM Category, there are different categories of measurements such as volume, weight, length, etc.
Now Go to Configuration <- Unit of measure
Then select a type, There are 3 types of measures here:
1. Reference Unit of Measure for this category
2. Bigger than the reference Unit of Measure
3. Smaller than the reference Unit of Measure.
The Reference Unit type is the measure set as a reference within the category that means other measures will be converted depending on this measure (ex: 1 roll = 10 square meters, 2 rolls = 20 square meters, etc.).
1. Reference Unit of Measure for this category:
In our case, if we want to create basic units as a Unit of measure, we taking Kg as a base so configure it as follows. So we are creating a UOM Kg with type as Reference unit for this measure category.
2. Bigger than the reference Unit of Measure.
If we want to Create another Unit of measure (UOM) as Ton with type as Bigger than the reference unit of measure. When we select the type we can now set a bigger ratio, how bigger the uom than base UOM. 1Ton means 1000kgs. And 1 dozen denotes 12 units, therefore one can set the ratio in this condition as 12.
3. Smaller than the reference Unit of Measure.
If we want to create another Unit of measure as g with type as Smaller than the reference unit. Now give the ratio 1kg = 1000grams.
Go to Inventory <- Product, Create your own product or select an existing one. In the products general information you have the possibility to select the Unit of measure (will be used in sales, inventory,…) and the Purchase Unit of Measure (for purchase). Product unit of measure indicates the Sale price. Purchase Unit of measure indicates the Cost price. In Unit of measure, select the unit of product which will be sold, and in which the internal transfers will be taking place. In the section of Product Unit of measure, select the unit of the product, then we would purchase the product.
Click on the edit button to create a new unit of measures. The unit of measure can be changed all over the whole process. Note that the unit of measure should be of the same category part.
Rounding precision of units of measure:
Rounding precision factor indicates how amounts are rounded after the conversion. A value of 1 gives rounding to the level of one unit, 0.01 gives rounding of one-hundredth. The “rounding precision” in the Unit of measure(UoM) defined only allows up to 3 digits after the decimal point (0.000). When doing inter-unit transfer, the rounding is automatically done by Odoo. For example, In the case of a product say sugar, the unit of measure is kg and the rounding precision is 0.100. Then rounding precision will affect the rounding of the computed quantity.
For example, in the purchase order, if we give the quantity as 2.356, the rounding precision will automatically affect the quantity and the quantity gets changed to 2.400.
In the Purchase order, the unit of measure can also be changed. Now select on the product unit of measure, there show a list of units from the same category. So we can choose from any of those units
In the sales order, the unit of measure can also be changed. Although select a product there will be a choice for edit unit of measure. Upon clicking the option, there show a list of units under the same category. So we can easily select the proper unit from the enlisted.
We are making the purchase order with the unit of measure Ton. Which means sales are in Kg and purchase is in Ton. After setting the UOMs we should select the UOM in product master. Set the UOMs as follows: 1. Unit of measure is ‘Kg’ 2. Purchase unit of measure is ‘Ton’.
